Dr Stéphane Hoerlé

Stéphane Hoerlé is a researcher in materials science who gained expertise in rock art conservation and pigment studies in South Africa and France.

Stéphane’s involvement in the project includes the study of alteration processes at rock art sites and a contribution to the archaeological studies by means of physicochemical analyses of pigments. The latter comprises of the identification of traces of pigment on archaeological artefacts; the investigation of the suitability of materials for dating; and the identification and comparison of paints to contribute to the reconstruction of the relative chronology of painting events.
